Courses at Catys Forge
I offer day courses in both knife making and blacksmithing. These are one to one courses which start
with breakfast and a discussion of what participants might like to make. (Lunch is also included).
We have a traditional hearth, plus gas hearth and induction heater,so they can learn different methods of forging. Initially I teach principles of smithing with a practice session involving getting used to blacksmith's tools, including hammers, chisels, tongs and the power hammer.
We then move on to making a piece of ornamental or practical iron work or a knife which is yours to take home. Once a course is booked we would discuss possible projects. There are obviously some limits as to what can be made in a day.
For blacksmithing this would be the scale and intricacy of the project, for knifemaking this also includes legal limits (see https://www.gov.uk/buying-carrying-knives)
